In 2008, he completed his undergraduate degree in Political Science and International Relations at Marmara University and in 2011 he completed his master's degree in Political Science and International Relations at Yıldız Technical University with his thesis titled “Syrian Foreign Policy and National Interest: 1990- 2010” at Yıldız Technical University Political Science and International Relations program in 2011. In 2017, he completed his doctoral studies at Istanbul University Political Science and International Relations program with the thesis titled “Muslim Brotherhood Organization in the Light of the Institutionalization Problem of the Islamic Movement”. Working as a research assistant in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at Erciyes University, Mercan conducts research on Middle Eastern Politics in general. Mercan, who has written various academic articles in this field, has a book titled Syria: Regime and Foreign Policy and Transformation of the Muslim World in the 21st Century.
