Changing Space and Transforming Neighborly Relations: The Case of Mardin

ABSTRACT

This study focuses on the reflections of the differences between traditional and modern spaces on neighborhood relations, daily life practices and social interaction in the case of Eski Mardin and Yenişehir districts in Mardin’s Artuklu district. Based on the assumption that neighborhood is a form of social relationship constructed in a spatial context, the study investigates how the changing physical environment transforms these relationships. The main purpose of the study is to understand the neighborhood experiences of individuals who moved from Old Mardin to Yenişehir and to reveal the relationship between these experiences and spatial change. While the original architectural texture of Old Mardin, common areas such as courtyards, roofs, streets, and traditional stone housing structure strengthened social interaction and neighborhood relations, it was found that modern apartment life in Yenişehir paved the way for individualization and weakened social ties. In the research, which was conducted with a phenomenological design, one of the qualitative research methods, in-depth interviews with 11 participants were analyzed with the Maxqda program and the findings were evaluated with the thematic analysis technique. This research, conducted in a culturally and ethnically rich city like Mardin, is important in terms of showing that spatial transformation is not only a physical transformation but also a social transformation, that neighborhood relations are reshaped with space, and that space plays a constitutive role in the construction of neighborhood relations.
